My Experience at THINKlab

The THINKlab was the environment to explore myself and design my future. In particular the working environment (link with people from other disciplines and industries, diverse backgrounds, different cultures etc.) help me to understand the added value of collaborative environments and how it could impact in changing people’s life. In addition to this I had the opportunity to play with a variety of technologies and explore more about the socioeconomic impact of those technologies in the management of construction projects and beyond. Moreover, the daily contact with my team members and immediate access to my line manager Professor Terrence Fernando was an asset to help me to learn how solve challenges; thinking proactively; be creative and innovative, manage my time; be task driven and count on people’s ethos and integrity. So if I could sum up my learning experience in the THINKlab I would say: I learnt how to turn my ideas into reality.

How has THINKlab supported/assisted your career and/or academic progression?

The fact that I could evaluate my research idea into reality within a fully interactive environment helped me to support my career and academic progression regardless. Consequently the facilities, networks with the industry, ICT support, research environment, expertise in the digital transformation etc. of the THINKlab worked as the fundamental to build up myself and hence to open my horizons:  to collaborate with industrial and academic experts in the area of Digital Construction Engineering (DCE). All these helped me to write academic articles in prestigious books and conferences (IEEE, Springer etc.) to win the International Research Award with my team in “Future Sebastian Leaders” by the International Research Council for Building and Construction as well as to work for key players such as Turner and Townsend; The University of Salford, CIOB and The University of Manchester.

My Future

The experience I gained between 2008 until 2013 worked as an asset to take a research fellow position in the University of Portsmouth and a Part Time Lecturer in the University of Warwick in 2014. Now, I am working as a Senior Lecturer in Construction Technology – Management in Anglia Ruskin University, Essex since August 2015.
